Microsoft opening tech center in Israel

“A multi-million dollar Microsoft Technology Center (MTC) is to be opened in the central Israeli city of Raanana. The globally-spread MTC initiative serves primarily for IT infrastructure sales, whose target buyers are medium- and large-sized companies. The centers’ engineers set up complete IT groundwork for its clients – including operating, virtualization and data systems, e-mail servers and intercompany communication. The MCTs are meant to allow Microsoft to sell a wider array of software solutions.”

Israelis discover new cancer treatment

“The prognosis for these patients could improve drastically if a compound developed by Israel’s Tiltan Pharma continues to succeed in clinical trials. The compound, dubbed TL-118, comes from the labs of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. It’s now undergoing its second phase of tests after proving effective against pancreatic tumors first in mice and then in more than 100 humans.”

The treatment denies tumor cells blood and with chemo treatments, tumors are destroyed.

Hebrew Univ. to post complete archives of Einstein

“Albert Einstein’s complete archives – from personal correspondence with half a dozen lovers to notebooks scribbled with his groundbreaking research – are going online for the first time.”

The archives can be found here. 2,000 documents have been added so far for a total of 7,000 pages; this includes his handwritten summary of his famous theory of relativism, E = mc². His complete documents will be added gradually to this archives by the Hebrew University.

US House approves Israeli visa bill for econ advancement

“The U.S. House of Representatives approved on Monday a bill that would add Israel to the list of countries eligible for non-immigrant investor visas in the United States. The legislation, sponsored by Rep. Howard Berman (D-Calif.) and approved by a unanimous 371-0 vote, would permit Israeli investors, who develop and direct the operations of a business, to live and work in the U.S., provided that they invest a substantial amount of capital in the country.”

Israel, Iran, Turkey, and Jordan come together for science

“In an extraordinary act of regional cooperation, Israel, Iran, Jordan and Turkey are to jointly provide funds for a particle accelerator as part of their commitment to a UNESCO-sponsored scientific project, it was announced on Wednesday. Each of the four countries has pledged $5 million toward the SESAME facility, which is being built near Amman. SESAME stands for Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East. According to the UNESCO website, the project aims to ‘foster scientific and technological excellence in the Middle East and neighboring countries (and prevent or reverse brain drain) by enabling world-class research,’ and to ‘build scientific and cultural bridges between neighboring countries.’”

Cisco buys Israeli company for $5bn

“Former Israeli company NDS, which operates a large R&D center in Jerusalem, is in advanced acquisition talks with information technology giant Cisco, Calcalist reported Thursday. The company, which develops software solutions for multi-channel television networks and is owned by the Premira fund and News Corp, is expected to finalize the sale within days in a mega-deal estimated at $5 billion.

“NDS was founded in 1988 in Jerusalem by a group of scientists from the Weizmann Institute of Science. The company specializes in the development of interactive systems for secure delivery of entertainment and information to digital TVs, digital set-top boxes, PCs and mobile devices. NDS also provides electronic security solutions for web applications.”

“The war talk about Iran is nothing new for Israel, under threats since its existence, reports Bloomberg News, which notes that the return on stocks in Israel the past 10 years was the highest of 24 benchmark indices in developed nations, including China and Norway, after factoring out volatility.”
